This paper analyzes the effect of mass forced displacement on urban poverty in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The process of displacement in Bosnia and Herzegovina involved “forced evictions”, implying no choice in displacement decision, meaning that this type of rural-urban migration was not a rational decision driven by economic motives. Consequently, this can possibly lead to a larger incidence of poverty among displaced people. The paper starts with a discussion of the specific features of the process of forced displacement and their possibly different effect on urban poverty compared to voluntary migration, based on qualitative evidence collected through interviews with people who experienced forced displacement during the conflict in the 1990s. Then, the probit model of determinants of poverty, based on the Living Standards Measurement Survey data, was estimated in order to provide empirical evidence of the effect of mass forced displacement on urban poverty, as well as the difference in the poverty incidence among displaced people compared to voluntary migrants. The results suggest that consumption is significantly lower among displaced households, while incidence of poverty is not affected by displacement status. The evidence also contributes to the migration literature by providing specific results about the relationship between mass forced displacement and urban poverty.
microRNA is a noncoding RNA sequence, 20-22 nucleotides long, which functions in silencing gene expression. Changes in normal microRNA expression lead to cancer progression. The following study has been done to elucidate the changes in the expression of microRNAs in ovarian cancer compared to the normal expression because such comparison may lead to better understanding of ovarian carcinogenesis. In the tumor samples, out of 680 microRNA types, 230 show high expression, 295 show low expression and 155 are non-expressed. When we categorized microRNAs based on fold increase >50, we found 31 high and 89 low expressed microRNAs. The huge differences in aberrant expression show the extent of changes in microRNA activities. Using Cancerminer tool, we found the corresponding mRNA targets of these abberantly expressed microRNAs. We found that the most target genes which are captured by the data process are related to cellular proliferation and carcinogenesis.
The dynamics of the contemporary environment with all its characteristics has greatly encouraged further research of the impact of innovation on the company's performance due to the paradigm that defines an innovation as means to enhance the competitiveness of enterprise. Thanks to the efforts of scientists, corporate managers and owners of capital can now choose from a variety of management tools to measure the innovation and success of the enterprise. In this paper, the methodology of Croatian Innovation Score (in Croatian: Hvatski Kvocijent Inovativnosti - HKI) is applied to assess the condition and the activities undertaken in order to build innovation capacity, and an assessment of the perception of innovation at the enterprise level, whereas the methodology of BEX index (Business Excellence Index) was used to measure business excellence of an enterprise. Applying the methodology on a sample of large manufacturing companies from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the composite innovation indices and business excellence indices were first calculated. The standard multiple regression has been applied to explain the relationship between innovation and business excellence of an enterprise. The results obtained in this research are encouraging and stimulating for the managers of the studied companies to strengthen the innovation capacity in order to advance on the business excellence ranking scale.(ProQuest: ... denotes formulae omitted.)1. INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on the presumption that the implementation of innovation positively affects the financial performance of companies that are being assessed for their business excellence. In their research, Tidd, Bessant & Pavitt (2005) point out that companies which implement innovations in order to improve their processes and differentiate their products / services are significantly ahead of their competition in terms of market share, profitability, companies' growth, and net income. Urban and Hauser (1993) highlight innovation as being essential for creating a competitive advantage and company's subsistence, although innovation is at the same time extremely risky activity that constantly requires enormous financial and human resources. Bearing all the above in mind, the managers' task is to ensure the continuity of innovation. However, in order to reduce the business risks of investing in innovation they also need information about the efficiency and effectiveness of resources that the company has invested in the innovation process. Synchronization of innovation capacity development, strategy options, processes and innovation models not only considerably contribute to the risk reduction of investing in innovation, but it also leads to achieving company's business excellence. In this study, authors analyze the relationship between innovation and business excellence of large manufacturing companies from Bosnia and Herzegovina using the methodologies established by Croatian scholars that have been tested on Croatian companies (Antoljak, Mitrovic et al., 2011; Belak & Aljinovic, 2008). The study comprises 36 large manufacturing companies for which their composite index of innovation will be calculated so as to pre-calculate summary data for innovation capacity categories, innovation processes and strategies and for innovation results. Composite index of business excellence (BEX) is to be calculated for the sample companies. Business Excellence Model (BEX) evaluates the existing and expected business excellence. Hereafter, the paper explores the correlation between innovation and company's business excellence by using the HKI and BEX indices. The main objective of this paper is, using standard multiple regression, to determine the correlation between innovation and business excellence of large manufacturing enterprises in B&H based on composite innovation and business excellence indices, operationalized according to HKI (innovation) and BEX (business excellence) methodology. …
The flora of the town of Blagaj was observed and researched during the vegetation seasons from 2004 to 2014. In total, 723 plant taxa from 102 families are presented in the list, 577 of which are newly found, while the presence of 14 previously reported taxa was not confirmed. Alien taxa present exclusively in culture were not analysed in this work. The most common family is Asteraceae s. l. (11.76%), followed by Poaceae (9.82%), Fabaceae (7.75%) and Lamiaceae (6.50%). The predominant life-forms are therophytes and hemicryptophytes with 265 and 264 taxa, respectively (36.65% and 36.51%). The floral elements spectrum shows the strong prevalence of Mediterranean plants (29.46%), while Central Eu ropean plants are almost absent (0.41%). A total of 38 taxa are found on the National Red List, while 27 taxa are classified as invasive.
The guanine rich locations are present in human genome. Previous studies have shown that the presence of G rich sequences and motifs may be significant for gene activity and function. We decided to focus our interest to identify G rich motifs in promoters of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. We used a set of 100 most common oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes (TSG) for this analysis. We collected 600nt long promoters with -500 and +100 TSS (transcription start site) from the oncogenes and TSG set. Using a computer program, we calculated the G densities using numbers and locations of G forms with 100nt moving widow. We included G numbers from 2 to 7 guanines. Analysis shows that G density increases from -500 to +100 and more from TSS. G density is found to be maximum within -/+100 of TSS. The results of G densities were compared with the expression data of the selected oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes in patients with colon cancer (n=174).
I address the validity of results presented in [S. Khalil, S. Salem, and M. Allam, Phys. Rev. D 89, 095011 (2014)] with regard to unification of gauge couplings within a particular SU(5) framework. The scalar sector of the proposed SU(5) model contains one 5- dimensional, one 24-dimensional, and one 45-dimensional representation. The authors discuss one specific unification scenario that supports the case for the LHC accessible color octet scalar. I show that the unification analysis in question is based on (i) an erroneous assumption related to the issue of nucleon stability and (ii) an incorrect input for the applicable set of renormalization group equations. This, in my view, invalidates the aforementioned gauge coupling unification study. I also question a source of the fermion mass relations presented in that work.
Tahini halvah is specific confectionery product known in Bosnia and Herzegovina over centuries. It is made of sesame-seed paste (tahini), sugar and soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) extract by certain technological process, with creating needle-like particles which give a specific fiber structure to halvah. Production of tahini halvah in Bosnia and Herzegovina mostly was placed under artisanal conditions by poorly trained staff and was based on experiences and established practice. There is a very few scientific papers deal with ways of production and specific properties of this product in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Main objective of this paper was focused on studying technological process of 4 different samples of tahini halvah (standard tahini halvah, tahini halvah with pistachios, tahini halvah with cacao and black halvah with wheat grits, cacao and nuts). All samples were produced under industrial conditions. Chemical and sensory quality parameters of investigated samples were presented in this paper. Significant differences between samples were found and influenced by different ingredients and technological process.
