INTRODUCTION Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of female cancer in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is the most common female cancer in women 15 to 44 years old. Cervical cancer is etiologically associated with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HRHPV). Data on the prevalence of HRHPV in Bosnia and Herzegovina are scant. This study investigates the prevalence of HRHPV infection among women of reproductive age compared with cervical cytology in the Tuzla Canton. METHODS We analyzed the results of HRHPV testing and Papanicolaou (Pap) test results in women up to 40 years old diagnosed at the Tuzla University Clinical Center (UCC) from January 2019 to March 2020. RESULTS Among 880 women tested for HRHPV, 27.2% (n = 239) were ≤ 40 years. In this age group HRHPV was detected in 33.5% (n = 80) of women, and 23.8% (n = 19) were women < 30 years. Out of 239 women tested for HRHPV, 60.2% had an abnormal Pap smear result. Therefore, 40.7% (n = 59) of HRHPV-positive women had an abnormal Pap test result. Women with a normal Pap test result had an HRHPV-positive test in 22.3% (n = 21) of cases. CONCLUSION The results obtained contribute to the knowledge about HPV prevalence and the incidence of squamous cell abnormalities in the most populous canton in Bosnia and Herzegovina, possibly reflecting the situation nationally. The high prevalence of HRHPV in women of reproductive age calls for urgent implementation of an organized cervical cancer screening program and HPV vaccination.

In this study, a method was developed for the determination of five neonicotinoid pesticides (acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, and thiamethoxam) in propolis. Two sample preparation methods were tested: solid-phase extraction and the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method. The identities of analytes were confirmed using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in the selected reaction monitoring mode. Solid-phase extraction resulted in cleaner extracts; therefore, the SPE-LC-MS/MS method was validated according to the SANTE protocol in triplicate at two spiking levels (10 ng/g and 50 ng/g). The average recoveries of analytes ranged from 61% to 101%, except for clothianidin (10–20%). The LOD ranged from 0.2 ng/g to 4.4 ng/g, whereas the LOQ was in the range of 0.8 ng/g–14.7 ng/g. In order to compensate for the matrix effect, matrix-matched calibration was used. Good accuracy (relative error: 1.9–10.4%) and good linearity (R2 > 0.991) were obtained for all compounds. The optimised method was applied to 30 samples: 18 raw propolis and 12 ethanol tinctures. Acetamiprid, imidacloprid, and thiacloprid were detectable in seven samples but were still below the LOQ. This study is the first to report the determination of several neonicotinoid residues in propolis.

Aim To investigate the association of FasL gene polymorphism (rs763110) with rheumatoid arthritis occurrence, disease activity, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) plasma concentration in Croatian patients, and to conduct an updated meta-analysis. Methods This cross-sectional study enrolled 81 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 94 control patients. After the assessment of the Disease Activity Score (DAS)-28, blood was taken for analysis. DNA was isolated from the whole blood to determine FasL polymorphism (rs763110) by polymerase chain reaction. Protein levels of TNF-α were determined with ELISA. After a detailed literature search, we conducted an updated meta-analysis using the Review Manager 5 software. Results Rheumatoid arthritis patients had significantly higher TNF-α concentration in plasma (1.65 [1.2-2.42] pg/mL) than controls (0.99 [0.77-1.35] pg/mL, P < 0.001). The FasL rs763110 polymorphism was not associated with rheumatoid arthritis occurrence in either codominant, dominant, recessive, overdominant, or log additive model. Furthermore, the rs763110 genotype was not associated with DAS 28 score or TNF-α concentration. After we added our results to an updated meta-analysis, the significant association previously reported for Western Eurasians was abolished. Conclusion Our data suggest that the association between FasL rs763110 polymorphism and RA susceptibility in Western Eurasians observed in previous studies might be overestimated and should be limited to the population of Southwestern Asia until further investigations are performed.

A subgraph H of a graph G with perfect matching is nice if G−V(H) has perfect matching. It is well-known that all fullerene graphs have perfect matchings and that all fullerene graphs contain some small connected graphs as nice subgraphs. In this contribution, we consider fullerene graphs arising from smaller fullerenes via the leapfrog transformation, and show that in such graphs, each pair of (necessarily disjoint) pentagons is nice. That answers in affirmative a question posed in a recent paper on nice pairs of odd cycles in fullerene graphs.

Background: Because of the health systems globalization, it is important to examine health systems organization in Africa, in terms of patient care, to highlight the failures and propose possible solutions. Objective: Modeling based on the Internet of Things (IoT) an Integrated Network for Monitoring Patient Data in West African Health Systems. Methodology: To achieve this, three steps have been followed. 1) Identification of the different characteristics of IoT-based health surveillance systems, WBAN systems and physiological parameters monitorable on a patient. 2) The modeling of the architecture of West African health systems in the form of a cloud of Technocentres. 3) Cross analysis between different IoT technologies, characteristics and functional requirements identified. All this is based on wireless medical sensor networks in Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) systems. Result: This work has been used to model health systems in Africa as a remote monitoring network for patients. Conclusion: The implementation of this model of monitoring networks will be a tool for supporting large-scale decision-making for a health system in Africa. It will enable the West African health system to have an information database.

There is an urgent need to apply available technologies to reduce the environmental impact of the construction industry. One of the possible solutions that can be implemented immediately is the industrial symbiosis between the waste-producing industries on the one hand and the cement industry, which consumes enormous amounts of raw materials for its production, on the other. In order for the industry to accelerate the use of these available materials and technologies, the potential of these materials must be disclosed. The present study shows a systematic approach to assess the potential of waste materials, by-products, and other raw materials available in the South East Europe that can be used in cement production. Their evaluation included the analysis of their availability, their chemical and physical properties, their chemical reactivity, and their contribution to the mortar’s strength. Based on the results and the analyses carried out, a recommendation for immediate use in the construction sector is given for each of the materials collected.

In recent decades, conventional medicine has begun to include natural remedies and spiritual therapy in the treatment of people with mental disorders, and in recent years, physicians and healthcare professionals more often refer to alternative and complementary methods in the treatment of mental disorders. Alternative medicine includes “other treatments” and a more suitable term would be complementary medicine which supplements the definition of conventional medicine ac-cepted by the World Health Organization. After the rise of pharmaceutical industry in the second half of the 20 th century and significant advancement in the treatment of mental disorders, comes a period of disappointment and acceptance of the fact that synthetic drugs are not omnipotent and may have serious and unpleasant side-effects. Due to this fact, there is a growing interest in the treatment of mental disorders with the use of complementary methods. It is important to note that these methods are not a substitute for standard treatment procedures and their appropriate application does not diminish the importance of classical treatment of psychiatric disorders. Numerous patients refuse classical therapy and seek the help of complementary medicine methods. It is therefore important for physicians and healthcare professionals to have knowledge of complementary medicine which is science based and advises on treatment methods provided they are scientifically justified.

Materials‐binding peptides have the capability to specifically recognize 2D nanomaterials and their modification via covalent attachment of nonnatural moieties offers exciting under‐explored possibilities to tune and exploit this recognition property. Here, an integrated suite of experimental approaches is used to reveal how conjugation of a fatty‐acid chain modifies surface adsorption of a graphene‐binding peptide, P1, achieved using quartz crystal microbalance measurements to access biomolecule adsorption free energies at the aqueous graphene interface, atomic force microscopy to investigate the overlayer morphologies, and circular dichroism spectroscopy to probe peptide secondary structures in the unadsorbed state. To complement these data, replica‐exchange with solute tempering molecular dynamics simulations predict the conformations of these biomolecules in both the surface‐bound and unbound states. Conjugation of the fatty acid dramatically modifies the surface‐adsorbed conformations. However, these conformational changes do not lead to substantial differences in the graphene binding strengths for each of the biomolecules studied, due to enthalpic/entropic compensation arising from changes to the contributions of peptide/graphene, peptide/fatty acid, and fatty acid/graphene interactions. These findings provide a fundamental basis for guiding future modification of materials‐binding peptides to adapt their binding propensities for applications using 2D nanomaterials.
