This study encompassed 77 randomly assigned participants of both sexes and older than 65 of age. Every participant was questioned in his/her own house and completely familiarized with the methodology and the aims of the questionnaire. Out of 27 men, data on falls down were provided by 4 participants (14.81%): one of them lived alone while three of them lived in their families. Out of 50 women, data on falls down were provided by 17 (34%) participants: 9 of them lived in their families and 8 lived alone. Out of all living alone women 44% fell down twice or more during this study in comparison to 20% of living alone men. Regarding the values of the score of risk factors obtained throughout the questionnaire and the Berg balance scale, there are statistically significant differences between men and women (p < 0.005, i.e. p < 0.01), as well as participants that have never fallen down (p < 0.001, i.e. p < 0.01), while regarding the life style (living alone or in the family) there are no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05). Nowadays, the Berg balance scale is the most frequently used questionnaire that is, in total, significantly superior to other ever utilized tests. Average values of results obtained throughout the Berg balance scale in this study are statistically significantly higher in men and those participants who did not provide data on falls down, while regarding the life style there are no statistically significant differences.

UNLABELLED The aim of this research is to establish by immunohistochemistry if there is a change in the expression of collagen type IV, as a substitute of basement membrane, in development of epithelial dysplasia in chronically inflamed colon mucosa. METHODS Biopsy specimens from 270 patients were examined: 74 were classified as inflammatory-regenerative and 196 as dysplastic lesions. There were 108 cases of mild dysplasia, 58 cases of moderate and 30 cases severe dysplasia, respectively. Visualisation of collagen IV and its way of expression within basement membrane of glandular crypts was performed by immunohistochemistry and then compared with findings in normal colon mucosa and colon adenocarcinoma tissue. RESULTS Changes in the expression of collagen IV comprised of its focal irregularities, diffuse thinning and/or thickening, focal interruptions or its complete absence. Significant changes in the expression of collagen IV in relation to normal mucosa already occur in inflammatory-regenerative mucosa. In mild dysplasia, these changes are more intensive in relation to those in inflammatory altered mucosa as well as at severe dysplasia in relation to moderate dysplasia. Changes in the expression of collagen IV in severe dysplasia are significantly more serious than in moderate dysplasia but are identical to those in colon adenocarcinoma tissue. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that change in the expression of collagen IV is in correlation to a degree of epithelial dysplasia that developed in flat chronically inflamed colon mucosa.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of this work was to order quantitative parameters of the proximal convoluted tubules (PCT) in the normal rat kidney cortex. Volume density (VV), both surface and specific surface density toward interstitium (SVi and SVi/VV) and toward lumen (SVl and SVl/VV) and thickness (T) of tubules epithelium have been stereologically ordered. MATERIAL AND METHODS Stereologically were analysed 170 test fields by lattice L36 on the paraffin sections of the three adult male Wistar rats kidney dyeing by PAS-method. RESULTS The mean values of the variables analysed were: VV=76.4 % +/-0.012; SVi=0.056 microm-1 +/-0.004; SVl=0.028 microm-1 +/-0.003; SVi/VV=0.073 microm-1 +/-0.003; SVl/VV=0.037 microm-1 +/-0.005; T=18,26 microm +/-0.897. CONCLUSIONS Stereological methods are making a very valuable contribution to science over recent years. We have used unbiased stereological counting methods to obtain objective quantitative parameters of the PCT epithelium in the normal rats' kidney cortex.

Although the drug abuse has been evidenced in every age of the human life, it seems that its occurrence is crucial during adolescence period with its well-known consequences on the further personality development. Adolescents like to experiment with risky lifestyles without adequate knowledge about their possible harmful effects and consequences. International experiences have represented that early onset of the risky behaviour predisposes young persons for serious problems in social, psychological and physical future lives. It has been noticed that adolescents like to combine different psychoactive substances. Therefore the aim of this study was to present the most important and the most actual substances abused by young adolescents together with the substance characteristics. This research included 600 adolescents with the same prevalence regarding age, sex and living zone (rural-urban). Our research showed that simultaneous abuse of various harmful psychoactive substances (polydrug abuse) is the most common (tobacco smoking and cannabis consumption in 75% of cases, alcohol consumption and cannabis consumption in 80% of cases).

Experimental design is a critically important tool for improving the performance of a manufacturing process. It has also extensive application in the development of new processes. It is important to investigate all factors that may be of importance and to not be overly influenced by past experience, particularly when we are in the early stages of experimentation or when the process is not very mature.

We have theoretically studied the stability and reconstruction of (111) surfaces of Au, Pt, and Cu. We have calculated the surface energy, surface stress, interatomic force constants, and other relevant quantities by ab initio electronic structure calculations using the density functional theory (DFT), in a slab geometry with periodic boundary conditions. We have estimated the stability towards a quasi-one-dimensional reconstruction by using the calculated quantities as parameters in a one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model. On all surfaces we have found an intrinsic tensile stress. This stress is large enough on Au and Pt surfaces to lead to a reconstruction in which a denser surface layer is formed, in agreement with experiment. The experimentally observed differences between the dense reconstruction pattern on Au(111) and a sparse structure of stripes on Pt(111) are attributed to the details of the interaction potential between the first layer of atoms and the substrate.
