Introduction: An increasing number of people suffer from degenerative diseases of the hip joints. Many studies report the long-term outcomes of invasive therapy in the treatment of coxarthrosis. However, results of prolonged conservative treatment are scarce. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of prolonged conservative physical therapy on functional recovery of degenerative hip changes. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 47 patients diagnosed with coxarthrosis according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria. Data on sex and age, duration of physical therapy, the type of physical therapy, the values of manual muscle test (MMT) at admission and discharge, were taken from the medical records of the patients. Results: There were 76.6% female and 23.4% male patients. Half of the patients were 70 or more years old. Majority of patients were treated by kinesiotherapy (74.5%) and had significantly different (p < 0.05) values of MMT at admission and discharge. Duration of treatment was 10-20 days for 23.4% of patients, while 29.8% received treatment for 31-40 days. Conclusion: According to our results, MMT significantly improved at the end of the treatment. Thus, physical therapy had a positive effect on the recovery of muscle strength in patients with coxarthrosis.
Recent developments in computer and communication technologies are leading to an increasingly networked and wireless world. This raises new challenging questions in the context of networked control systems, especially when the computation, communication and energy resources of the system are limited. To efficiently use the available resources it is desirable to limit the control actions to instances when the system really needs attention. Unfortunately, the classical time-triggered control paradigm is based on performing sensing and actuation actions periodically in time (irrespective of the state of the system) rather than when the system needs attention. Therefore, it is of interest to consider event-triggered control as an alternative paradigm as it is more natural to trigger control actions based on the system state, output, or other available information. Event-triggered control can thus be seen as the introduction of feedback in the sensing, communication, and actuation processes. To facilitate an easy implementation of event-triggered control, we propose to combine the principles and particularly the benefits of event-triggered control and classical periodic time-triggered control. The idea is to periodically evaluate the triggering condition and to decide, at every sampling instant, whether the feedback loop needs to be closed. This leads to the so-called periodic event-triggered control (PETC) systems. In this chapter, we discuss PETC strategies, their benefits and two analysis and design frameworks for linear and nonlinear plants, respectively.
The problem of an ageing population has only recently gained attention in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH). Adequate pension reforms cannot be expected if most citizens are unaware of the issues or even oppose the reforms necessary. The primary research is based on opinion survey data collected in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBIH) with a special focus on the fact that the ageing of the population might pose a problem for pension systems in the future. The results show that more than three quarters of the respondents are aware of this problem in FBIH. The logit regression model shows that pensioners, respondents who prefer the primary role of government, those with higher levels of education and reported living standard are more likely to recognise this issue. Improvements in the efficiency of pension funds, reduction in public spending and active measures aimed at the prevention of emigration from BIH are the solutions most widely recognised.
ABSTRACT The aim of this essay is to give voice to the distinct types of feminist consciousnesses in dominantly Muslim societies, which have been mostly ignored or marginalized by Western and Western-influenced feminisms. I analyze Islamic and secular feminisms in Turkey (a secular regime) and in Iran (an Islamic regime) and show the shortcomings and patriarchal elements in both movements. I also show the authenticity and necessity of both movements, and emphasize their contributions to the feminist ideal of pluralism. Finally, by producing this project, I hope to carve a space for Middle Eastern Feminisms in global feminist scholarship.
Bacillus anthracis is an aerobic, Gram-positive and spore-forming bacterium, which causes anthrax in herbivores. Humans get infected after coming into contact with infected animals' products. An unmatched case–control study was conducted to identify the importance of demographic, biological and/or behavioural factors associated with human cutaneous anthrax outbreaks in the hotspot areas of Northern Tanzania. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to both cases and controls. The age range of participants was 1–80 years with a median age of 32 years. In the younger group (1–20 years), the odds of being infected were 25 times higher in the exposed group compared to the unexposed group (OR= 25, 95% CI = 1.5–410). By contrast, the odds of exposure in the old group (≥20 years) were three times lower in the exposed group compared to the unexposed group (OR = 3.2, 95% CI = 1.28–8.00). Demographic characteristics, sleeping on animal's skins, contacting with infected carcasses through skinning and butchering, and not having formal education were linked to exposure for anthrax infection. Hence, a One Health approach is inevitable for the prevention and control of anthrax outbreaks in the hotspot areas of Northern Tanzania.
SUMMARY – Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular brain tumor. It develops from endothelial cells, usually in the liver, lung, bone and soft tissue. Primary localization of this tumor in the intracranial space is very uncommon; only 47 cases have been described in the literature. This tumor was initially classified as grade I (benign) in the World Health Organization (WHO) 2007 classification. In 2016, this tumor was re-classified as grade III (malignant). Herein, the first case report of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma in the cerebellum of a male patient is presented. Complete surgical excision was done. No adjuvant therapy was administered. Magnetic resonance imaging performed 2 years after the surgery continued to show no recurrence of the tumor. To our knowledge, this is the first report of cerebellar location of this rare tumor. In addition, the authors report drastic re-classification of the epithelioid hemangioendothelioma from the benign tumor (WHO 2007) to a malignant one (2016), which significantly changes postoperative management and follow up of this brain neoplasm.
This study aimed to assess the application of Cameriere's third molar maturity index (I3M) to select an individual of 18years or older (adult) from younger than 18years (minor) in a sample of Polish individuals. The final sample of 982 panoramic images aged between 15 to 24years was analyzed. The specific cut-off value of I3M<0.08 was analyzed. The specificity (Sp) and sensitivity (Se) for males were 91.2% and 86.2% respectively. The Sp and Se for females were 93% and 82.6% respectively. The probabilities of correctly classified individuals were 87.6% and 85.3%, and Bayes post-test probability was 96.3% and 97% in males and females respectively. Further analysis indicated the alternative cut-off value of I3M<0.07, which improved the specificity, 95.3%, and 94.7%, and worsen correct classification, 86.5%, and 84.4%, in males and females, respectively. Our results showed that the specific cut-off point of I3M<0.08 may be a useful tool for discriminating adults from minors in Poland.
Accurate simulation within virtual environments is a prerequisite of using these environments for training tasks. This accuracy has been shown to be a function of the fidelity in many senses. Virtual Reality (VR) has been used to aid in numerous training tasks through the implementation of pedagogical processes via the medium of serious games. This paper considers a complex motor task and whether VR is able to be used as a training environment for this task. Additionally we consider whether augmented virtuality improves task performance. The task being analysed is participant ability in a clay pigeon shooting simulator. Specifically, we evaluate if the type of training being presented influences the performance of participants in this task. VR affords the ability to provide supplementary information which is not typically available in a real-world equivalency. This paper presents a between-subjects repeated measures experiment to identify if the type of training being presented influences performance measures in the motor task. Clay pigeon shooting is considered to be a difficult sport as it requires depth-perception, lead calculation and accurate timing from the shooter. This paper shows that different types of training presented to a participant (N=31) can influence their performance in this task, and that this skill development propagates into future repeated measures. It is also shown that training for this type of task, which is frame-critical, can be deployed with success into the safer environment of VR.
