Service gateways are key for the integration of different technologies on smart environments. In the home entertainment domain, a challenging field is the creation of media data flows among heterogeneous devices. This kind of technology could support a broad range of services. The proposed approach introduces a middleware layer built around a service gateway. The gateway stores information and capabilities of each multimedia source or target in a directory which can be browsed. A seamless connection is performed through translation services for media data and events. Finally, the admission service dynamically controls the available bandwidths and computing power consumption.
Until now, smart cards and automation networks have been integrated only for authentication and security purposes. This paper describes a proposal based on the idea of a higher grade of integration between the network and the smart card in such a way that a smart card can be used to configure an entire network. Applications of this approach would support future developments of real intelligent, ambient environments.
