SUMMARY In low-income countries, epidural analgesia is not always available during child-birth. Common alternatives include parenteral application of certain opioids such as pethidine. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of peth-idine use during childbirth on vital parameters of the neonates and compare the Apgar scores of the neonates whose mothers received pethidine during labor with those whose mothers did not receive it. This retrospective study included 116 neonates from Mostar University Clinical Hospital. A total of 58 of those neonates’ mothers received pethidine during labor. The women included in this study were most often primiparous (75.9%). Most of them did not have an induced delivery (68.1%) and in half of the mothers, pethidine was used in labor. Female and male neonates were almost equally represented in the sample. The results of the study indicate that pethidine did not affect the investigated variables including the Apgar score, laboratory results (bilirubin and CRP) and transfer to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). A correlation between the use of pethidine, the number of previous births and the mothers’ age was not established. According to our results, the correct application of pethidine (50 mg IV) did not cause any significant adverse effects on the newborns. Neverthe-less, the use of pethidine during childbirth should be carefully considered, as the toxicity of its intermediate norpethidine is not fully known.
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of strategic planning on the performance of healthcare institutions, with a particular focus on its application in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and comparison to international practices. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, including a secondary analysis of relevant literature (WHO, OECD, NHS Trust, Ginter et al.) and a primary quantitative analysis conducted through a questionnaire. The survey was distributed to 15 public and private healthcare institutions in BiH, including clinical centers, health centers, and specialized hospitals. A total of 183 valid responses were collected from medical and non-medical staff, including physicians, nurses, and managerial personnel. The key dimensions examined were the existence of a formal strategic plan, internal communication and employee participation in the planning process, staff satisfaction and motivation, as well as patient satisfaction based on subjective perceptions. The results indicate that healthcare institutions implementing strategic planning report higher efficiency (14.0%), greater patient satisfaction (16.2%), and a lower number of adverse events (32.6%). Furthermore, institutions in BiH with formal strategic plans demonstrate 19.0% better internal communication and 12.0% higher staff motivation compared to institutions without such plans. The study concludes that strategic planning significantly contributes to improvements in the quality, efficiency, and sustainability of healthcare services, particularly in transitional healthcare systems such as that of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
• This paper investigated the withdrawal capacity of the double-threaded nuts mounted in 3D-printed materials. The basic technical properties and the withdrawal force of the double-threaded nuts for the specimens made of PLA, WPLA, and layered WPLA+PLA configuration (with and without STP adhesive) were investigated. The results are compared with the literature data of withdrawal force for beech wood, MDF, and par-ticleboard with and without the adhesive. The research has determined the effects of the properties of 3D printed materials (density, compressive and tensile strength), the infill and printing patterns, and adhesive on withdrawal capacity of double-threaded nuts. Double-threaded nuts mounted with adhesive had higher withdrawal forces (about 25 % for PLA and WPLA specimens, and 15 % for layered WPLA+PLA specimens) than those mounted without adhesive. The highest values of withdrawal forces, regardless of the adhesive, were obtained for layered WPLA+PLA configuration, followed by WPLA, and the lowest for PLA. No significant difference was found be-tween the withdrawal forces for WPLA and layered WPLA+PLA specimens for both cases – with and without an adhesive. The withdrawal forces of double-threaded nuts for the PLA specimens were higher than the withdrawal forces for the beech (16.7 % mounted without adhesive and 11.6 % mounted with an adhesive), and other combinations showed a difference higher than 35 % in favor of 3D printed materials. The present analysis, which determines and compares used traditional dismountable connectors in 3D-printed furniture elements, is applicable for research and practice.
As the 21 st -century paradigm, sustainable development implies, among other things, the need to ensure environmental sustainability through replacement of traditional energy sources with environmentally acceptable renewable ones. Economic literature identifies a number of prerequisites and determinants needed for the successful use of renewable energy sources. The purpose of this study is to deepen our understanding of the determinants of an individual’s willingness to support the implementation of energy-saving measures. A nation-wide citizen perception survey of 3,024 respondents was carried out in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2018 to collect data for this study. The paper takes a micro-level approach focusing on the behaviour of an individual. The respondents were found to have a positive attitude toward renewable energy projects. Most of them (72.78%) support such projects. Logistic regression (maximum-likelihood estimation) was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. The results of the study show that there are several important predictors of an individual’s support for projects related to renewable energy sources, including age, gender, income, satisfaction with the standard of living, religiousness, living in a male-dominated household, and ethnicity. The results of the study can help policymakers to design and adopt adequate policy measures for promoting financial investments in renewable energy sources, and project developers to tailor their communication and promotion strategies to the needs of specific population segments to better achieve the goals and benefits of such projects.
